Field Notes, LLC ("Field Notes," "we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights with respect to it. By using the Field Notes app or website, you agree to the practices described here.
1. Information we collect
Account information. When you create an account, we collect your name, email address, username, and password (stored in hashed form). You may optionally provide a profile photo and bio.
Sign in with Apple or Google. If you choose to create an account using Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google, we receive limited profile information from those providers — typically your name and email address. If you use Apple's private email relay, we will receive and store the relay address Apple provides. We do not receive your Apple or Google password. The information we receive is governed by Apple's and Google's respective privacy policies in addition to this one.
User-submitted content. This includes travel ratings, reviews, subcategory scores (such as safety, cost, food, and walkability), and any photos or comments you submit to the app.
Device and usage data. We automatically collect information about the device you use to access Field Notes, including device type, operating system, app version, IP address, and general location derived from IP. We also collect usage data such as pages or screens viewed, features used, and session duration.
Location data. With your permission, we may collect precise location data to help you discover and rate nearby destinations. You can disable location access at any time through your device settings.
Communications. If you contact us via email or support channels, we retain those communications to respond to your inquiry and improve our service.
2. How we use your information
We use the information we collect to:
- Operate and improve the Field Notes app and its features
- Aggregate and display traveler ratings and destination scores
- Personalize your experience and recommend destinations
- Send service-related communications (account confirmations, updates, security alerts)
- Send marketing or promotional messages, with your consent where required by law
- Analyze usage trends and improve product performance
- Detect and prevent fraud, abuse, or violations of our Terms of Service
- Comply with applicable laws and legal obligations
3. How we share your information
We do not sell your personal information. We may share your information in the following limited circumstances:
Publicly submitted content. Ratings, reviews, and scores you submit are displayed publicly within the app and may be aggregated into destination scores.
Service providers. We work with third-party vendors who assist us in operating Field Notes. These vendors are contractually required to protect your data and may only use it to provide services to us. Our key infrastructure providers include:
- Supabase — our backend database and authentication infrastructure. Your account data, submitted content, and app data are stored in Supabase. Supabase is SOC 2 Type II certified and stores data on AWS infrastructure. See Supabase's privacy policy at supabase.com/privacy.
- Apple (Sign in with Apple) — identity provider for users who sign in with their Apple ID. See Apple's privacy policy at apple.com/legal/privacy.
- Google (Sign in with Google) — identity provider for users who sign in with their Google account. See Google's privacy policy at policies.google.com/privacy.
Legal requirements. We may disclose your information if required by law, court order, or governmental authority, or if we believe disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of Field Notes, our users, or others.
Business transfers. If Field Notes is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you before your information is transferred and becomes subject to a different privacy policy.
4. Data retention
We retain your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide you services. If you delete your account, we will delete or anonymize your personal information within 30 days, except where we are required by law to retain it longer or where retention is necessary to resolve disputes or enforce our agreements.
5. Your rights and choices
Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your personal information:
Access. Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
Correction. Request that we correct inaccurate or incomplete information.
Deletion. Request that we delete your personal information. You may also delete your account directly within the app.
Portability. Request a machine-readable export of your data.
Opt-out of marketing. Unsubscribe from promotional emails at any time using the link in any marketing email, or by contacting us directly.
Location access. Disable precise location collection at any time through your device settings.

6. Data security
We implement reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information against unauthorized access, loss, or misuse. Your data is stored with Supabase, which maintains SOC 2 Type II certification and encrypts data at rest and in transit. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. We encourage you to use a strong, unique password and to contact us immediately if you suspect unauthorized access to your account.
7. Children's privacy
Field Notes is not directed to children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will take steps to delete it promptly. 8. International users
Field Notes is operated from the United States. If you are accessing the app from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States, where data protection laws may differ from those in your country. By using Field Notes, you consent to this transfer. Where required by law (for example, under the GDPR), we rely on appropriate legal mechanisms for cross-border data transfers.
9. Third-party links and services
The app may contain links to third-party websites or services. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those third parties, and this Privacy Policy does not apply to them. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party services you access through Field Notes.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "last updated" date at the top of this page and notify you by email or in-app notification if the changes are material. Your continued use of Field Notes after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
